Andean people used spondylus shell as complete shells in rituals or cut and polished into pieces and used as inlay in silver and gold jewellery. Spondylus was also carved and used in body adornments and placed in burials.
Spondylus lives deep below sea level, retrieving them requires experienced divers. The earliest known example of spondylus diving in South America comes from drawings on ceramics and mural paintings during the Early 200 BC-AD 600. Modern South American divers collect spondylus shell using oxygen tanks; although some still the traditional method of holding their breath for up to 2.5 minutes to dive up to 20 metres below the surface of the sea.
